set in spain during the inquisition, luiza is a scullery maid who has the gift of magic through the words of her ancestors. the magic gets her entered into a tournament to fight to become the king's champion and give her safety and power. unfortunately as her power is shown her jewish ancestry threatens to come to light and have her tortured and killed.

bardugo's writing was just brilliant in this one; i had to take a break between thanksgiving and winte rbreak (about two weeks) and was able to pick this up and get re-immersed like it was nothing. excellent writing and a great plot that had me sat down and reading it for HOURS. no character was fully good or bad and the dynamics between everyone was great. also was unaware of the brutality jewish, muslim, lutheran, and other religions had to go through during that period (the us school system FAILED me) and it was written with such care and passion.

just a good read that broke me out of my reading slump
