cureadosities 's review for:
The Best Short Stories 2021: The O. Henry Prize Winners
by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
Five stars for:
-'From Far Around They Saw Us Burn' by Alice Jolly
-'Fisherman's Stew' by Jowhor Ile
-'Grief's Garden' by Caroline Albertine Minor
-Adichie's Introduction
Notice the overarching theme: death.
I read this as a part of research since I planned to submit short stories to literary magazines, but now I'm more confused than before. I don't mind writers getting political, even endorsing it, but I started this book with reading stories in mind instead of reading essays. If the 'I' is none other than the writer then why not write a memoir instead?
Anyway, I couldn't get into 'Normal People' before, but reading 'Color and Light' made me understand why Sally Rooney is highly appreciated today. Among all, she's still trying to write scenes and plots with actually engaging dialogues; all that constitutes a story.
