My Lies, Your Lies by Susan Lewis
4.0

The book is split between pages from the memoir and back to present day with Joely as she is writing it.

The book began with a page from the memoir and I definitely got ‘My Dark Vanessa’ vibes straight away as we read about this young girl and her music teacher. From here it had me hooked. I couldn’t wait to get back to the memoir so I could find out exactly what happened between them.

Freda is an eccentric character who I really disliked, although I suppose she was written to be disliked and this came across well. She was so secretive which just made me want to read on even more.

I can’t go into too much detail without giving away some major spoilers but there was definitely plenty of twists, one that I just did not guess at all and I was gobsmacked. When this is revealed the action and pace of the book picks up even more, turning a little sinister at times which had me on the edge of my seat.

Unfortunately, as good as the main section of the book was, the ending let it down which is why it’s only scored 3.5 stars (rounded up to 4). As mentioned, once some of the major plot twists are revealed it’s all go with the action with it coming to an abrupt end and the memoir finishing. To be honest I think it should have ended there and it would have been brilliant, however it continued with at least another 6 chapters that in my opinion just weren’t needed. The story had naturally come to it’s conclusion and the last remaining chapters just seemed to be unnecessary dialogue and added nothing to the overall plot.

It's brilliant before those last 6 chapters.
