Defy the Night by Brigid Kemmerer

3.0

Defy the Night is an atmospheric YA, loose retelling of Robin Hood where we have a class division, further intensified by a sickness which plagues the inhabitants of Kandala.

This was my first time reading Kemmerer who seems to be a beloved YA author after Cursebreakers, and I found the plot of this to be very fast paced from the start and there weren't any dull moments. It did take some time for important aspects to happen, but apart from that this was a very light and entertaining read.

The main flaw with Defy the Night is how tropey it is and as someone who has read a fair bit of YA, it was very obvious where the novel was going to go after the first couple of chapters. Kemmerer did try and include some twists and turns, but once again I found these to be rather obvious early on.
We have your standard female protagonist who wants to rebel, your male lead who acts like a bad guy but is actually sweet. Just very stereotypical of modern YA and I felt there was nothing new or exciting.

All in all, I actually enjoyed my reading experience and this was nice to just read something fun and light-hearted- just reads like a story thats been told thousands of times before!
