Daughters of Jubilation by Kara Lee Corthron

2.0

I really didn't expect her to speed run the 5 stages of grief in the last 40 pages

The last 1/3 really killed this book for me. The tone went from mysterious to goofy to extremely serious so fast I didn't know what to expect. Based on the set up of this book, I didn't think it would make me sob but oh well. I have such emotional whiplash from the ending but not in a good way??

I did really enjoy the first 2/3 of this book when Evvie is first learning about her powers and her family. I enjoyed some of the more unspoken things about her situation and the antagonist and I kind of wish they had remained unnamed. I was so disappointed by the goofy explanations and unearned traumatic ending because I had been so invested.

I also really liked Evvie's inner monologue. She curses throughout like I bet most people do. It was refreshing to see that in a book because it is usually omitted and it helped me get a sense of her character right off the bat. I also liked how normally her sexual relationship was portrayed. It wasn't like this - magical thing or anything corny about how your first time changes you. It was just nice, and she got to explore that side of herself in a mostly healthy way (again something that is usually omitted on page).
