Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
by J.K. Rowling
This one was a lot more fun than the first, maybe because I didn't watch this movie nearly as many times?
I knew the ending, but not how they got there. I didn't remember Hagrid's history at all. I didn't know that the voice Harry was hearing around the school was the basilisk. I didn't expect Hermione to get petrified.
But.
I don't like Dobby, for the same reason that I didnt much like Hagrid in book one. Both of them had all the answers to the main "mystery" of the book and simply refused to tell Harry for no apparent reason. Then there's the fact that it is never really explained why Dobby cares so much about Harry in the first place... Why go through all this effort to help him (and why try to help him in such a convoluted way)?
And...I still don't get how the bird made it into the chamber of secrets. Magic? Ugh.
Also, I hate ghosts. I can accept random nonsensical magic, but ghosts make no sense and they cheapen the stakes.
But Gilderoy Lockhart was amazingly fun. I hope he shows up again in the series, now a better person thanks to his memory mishap.
Another reason why this book was better than the first was that there was less of a focus on classes. And they actually did some useful magic, so the magic itself is starting to seem less like a gimmick.
