The Nightingale was a great work of historical fiction that tells the story of two sisters during the German occupation of France during WWII. The younger sister, who is often called "impetuous", actively fights back against the Nazis, putting herself in harms way time and time again. The older sister remains at home with her child, but must overcome the struggles that come with needing to house German soldiers and live day-to-day in a place where food and resources are incredibly scarce.

This was a TOUGH one! Each I listened, I got more depressed and stressed - which is the right reaction to the reality of the war and what people went through. Every situation just became more dire, and the story just did not let up. It was long and a bit slow at times, but it was needed to set the stage and appropriately tell this epic story. I highly recommend it on Audible - the reader did a phenomenal job with voices for each person, as well as nailing French, German, and English accents beautifully.

I'd say it's a must read for those into historical fiction or who are big hearted and ready to be taken on an emotional ride.
