The Edible Woman
by Margaret Atwood
I did really enjoy this book - it’s a big departure from what you might think a Margaret Atwood book would be if you know her primarily by the Handmaid’s Tale as this one is not particularly plot driven. This isn’t without reason though as the normality of Marian’s life contrasts the violence of losing touch with that reality. It deftly describes what Marian is feeling through the lens of consuming and being consumed. It treats the reader with respect as it’s never too literal with the metaphors and themes. It was also fairly easy to get through as Atwood’s writing isn’t too heavy. A big plus as well it offers a very balanced view of gender roles and how they are played rather than being starkly accusatory toward the men which adds depth to the perspective.
