Doppelganger by Marie Brennan

4.0

I don't know why they renamed this book Warrior. The original title, Doppelganger, was much better.

Mirage and Miryo are a lot alike, but that's kind of the point, they're the same person.

Mirage is a Hunter, a warrior for hire. I like how tough she is and her relationship with her fellow Hunter Eclipse. (And that they have a sibling relationship, not romantic.)

Eclipse was probably my favorite character, because of his banter with Mirage. Mirage is blood tasked (meaning she dies if she fails) to find the assassin who killed a witch.

Miryo has spent her whole life training to be a witch. I didn't like her as much. At least she's not stupid but she is a bit naive. I liked the Cousin Ren, and I wish she was in it more. Miryo fails her test to become a witch because her Doppelganger is still alive. She's given the quest of tracking it down and killing it, because her magic will destroy her if she doesn't. (She finally finds someone who knew her Doppelganger, but forgets to ask for its name! How stupid.)

I really appreciated the map and I don't think I've referenced one as much as this one, as Miryo chased Mirage across the world.

It got much better after Miryo and Mirage met. They have to discover the truth behind the doppelgangers and how they can both survive. It was a good mystery with plenty of political intrigue.

I didn't like that there were other doppelgangers. I agreed with Mirage, it makes them less special.

Will I read it again? I don't know. I was leaning towards keeping it but then there's a section that's boring and rather depressing.
SpoilerAfter Mirage gets her blood oath removed, the entire part between that and when they figured out how to put each other back together again needed to be cut. Being chased by the cousins, captured and escaped, was fine but rather tedious and not really necessary, but the next part where they just hide in a convent and sulk was terrible.

Plus then after they became one person they'd have time to adjust and learn about themselves before they faced the witches. Going in half cocked, then magically just knowing new spells was dumb. Though I did like the action and ending.
