Night of the Witch by Sara Raasch, Beth Revis

3.75

So I genuinely enjoyed this book but I think it's a bit closer to a 3.75 than a full 4.

Two point perspective following:
Frtizi - a young witch who just turned 18 and has lived her life within the protections of her coven. The daughter to the coven leader and sister to a powerful user of fire magic, Fritzi holds a magic affinity with herbs and potions. However, although she's lived in relative safety she has always heard a voice, an unknown presence that she was told was the temptations of wild magic which is dangerous and holds is power in the acts of evil.
Otto - a high ranking official in a witch hunting and burning society that has its roots in the dominate religion and extreme political powers. Otto is revered as a ruthless leader and champion of witch burning. But secretly, he has his own plans and ambitions and they may not align with those of his commander.

Pros:
No main character pregnancy tropes
Unique storytelling
Clear easy to follow writing style
References to historical events, attitudes, and ideology
Modern spin on witches and magic
Doesn't shy away from the real and terrible treatment of women and people who are falsely accused
Overall intriguing story and enjoyable

Cons:
I found the main love interest totally unnecessary. There are times when a romance subplot just feels right and organic and this just wasn't it for me. I would have found this story so much richer if it was a platonic bond, a deep friendship and a care that goes beyond just your basic type of fantasy romance. I think if it was a friendship that grew into this type of unity and willingness to fight and sacrifice I would have given it 5 stars or at least close to.

Also they didn't put a lot of emphasis on the origin tree. It was all about the Well until it was suddenly put into the book about 2/3 of the way through as some critical piece of importance.

I also felt that some aspects were predictable but that also can't be helped a lot of the time.

Overall a good read!
