Having grown up reading Jacqueline Wilson books I wanted to love her first adult novel so much, but unfortunately I just couldn't. I re-read the 'Girls' books before this, and the writing is basically exactly the same, if this didn't have (fairly poor attempts at) sex scenes it would be entirely suitable for 13 year olds. The writing isn't very mature, and nor are any of the characters tbh.

Although Ellie is 40 now, and has raised a kid entirely on her own, she thinks and acts exactly the same way as she did at 13. Her boyfriend was awful, the ending was predictable, and it suffered from the same issue all the 'Girls' books do of having a very rushed ending.

Although it was good to see what all the girls were up to 25 years later, I think that after 50+ years of writing children's novels she should stick to that and not try to venture into adult literature again.
