Ruination by Anthony Reynolds
5.0

I will admit I'm biased as I am a fan of Riot's Runeterra universe and some of the characters in this book specifically. I came into this book knowing the broad strokes of the story it was to tell but was pleasantly surprised by the detail and care put into making what had essentially devolved into legend in-universe into a proper novel.

I can't speak for if non-existing fans will love it as much as I did, but I feel it does a good job of explaining it's universe without bogging itself down in too many irrelevant details. I think it may be a good starting point for those interested in the universe who maybe weren't excited by the more steampunk setting of Arcane (the show). It's not as deep as Arcane, with less symbolism to explore and a more straightforward cast of villains and heroes but as a 400 page novelI think it accomplishes quite a lot without rushing or meandering itself into a book series (something that could've been done but frankly isn't needed).

Even if you're not looking to get into the whole universe, I think this could be a really enjoyable one and done story for those who don't mind a bit of lingering darkness in their books and like to ponder what could have happened had a character made a different choice.

For me, I will definitely be keeping this one on my shelf and recommending it to any friends with an interest. It's a solid fantasy and I look forward to any more upcoming novels by Reynolds or the Runeterra team.
