Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan

Mediocre, as expected.

Due to a medical situation, I have the luxury of a lot of time on my hands and the need to be completely sedentary, so I’m reading hungrily and keeping my ‘currently reading’ stack filled with a variety of genres and titles. If ever there was going to be a time to give this trilogy a try, that time is now. This is the type of book that is good for entertainment but won’t satisfy a desire to appreciate literary skill. That is OK.

What did I think? The characters are cloying, basic, and shallow. If people really live the way the characters in this novel live, I don’t want to know. The plot was outlandish to the point of absurdity. I rolled my eyes at least once per chapter. The writing was without much merit, but moved quickly, as light writing tends to do. There were no literary devices at play, other than occasional, heavy-handed symbolism. It was light on the brain, and there’s a definitive time and place for that. I actually can see the flair and drama of this story translating well to a silly romantic comedy, so I’ll probably check that out too. Why not?
