Michael Connelly just cannot write a bad book! It's impossible for him!

I was a little worried about reading this one (with it being book 6 in Ballard series, book 25 in the Bosch series and 39 overall in the Universe) after only reading a handful of Bosch novels. Thankfully though and with all plaudits going to the authors ability to get you fully invested in each of these characters without knowing their full history, You can pretty much pick up any book in the series and have a good time.

This novel has three storylines to follow that expertly link up bringing in new characters along the way. What I found to be very brave in this book is that Connelly even tackles the case of the Black Dhalia, very confidently I might add, which you just don't expect with it being one of the most infamous cold cases in America. I wonder if he is actually offering this up as an actual theory or he just felt like giving his character (Maddie Bosch) a big case to really make an impact career-wise?

A great book to start off the year as it ticks all the crime thriller boxes.
