It's spooky season and the perfect time to listen to a scary story. Cuckoo by Gretchen Felker-Martin is about a group of teens who are sent to a gay conversion camp in the mid-nineties. But on top of the horrible and abusive treatment they receive, something monstrous is going on that will leave these kids even more traumatized.
This book is HEAVY. The first half follows the teens through the weeks they're at camp in 1995 before ultimately escaping. And the second half jumps forward to 2011 where everyone is still dealing with the abuse they received in their own ways. But when they finally see a way to take out these monsters once and for all, they reunite one more time.
Definitely check all the trigger warnings for this book, especially if you're queer or dealing with any religious trauma. because it can be pretty graphic at times. 🖤
Thank you MacMillan Audio for sending me a copy of the audiobook to review. I really liked that this book had a full cast, which allows you to feel even more connected to the characters and what they're going through. #MacAudio2024
