Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë
5.0

“Hopeless of the future, I wished but this - that my Maker had that night thought good to require my soul of me while I slept; and that this weary frame, absolved by death from further conflict with fate, had now but to decay quietly, and mingle in peace with the soil of this wilderness. Life, however, was yet in my possession, with all its requirements, and pains, and responsibilities. The burden must be carried; the want provided for; the suffering endured; the responsibility fulfilled. I set out.”

Holy shit I loved this book. It was so much more darker and hilarious and readable than I was expecting. Bits of this book make sooo much more sense now that I know that phrenology was in vogue during the 1840s soooo keep that in mind when reading this I guess lol.

I’m upset that I never read this in high school, but also there was no way that 16 year old me would have kept up with Brontë who at every point in this book is 5 steps ahead of the “reader”.

(Also this book led to me falling down a mythology rabbit hole to learn about Danaë and her crazy story so thank you Charlotte for guiding me)
