Satan's Fan Club by Mark Kirkbride
4.0

James and Louise are twins. They live in London with their very Christian parents who lead a Doomsday church, and their younger sister, Harriet. The twins have been ostracized for their religion, but one day, something snaps, and they decide to live their lives in the way they want.

When they’re invited to a party, they meet a man dressed as the devil. He offers to let them into Satan’s Fan Club, where they’ll join after committing a crime that’s specifically tailored to them. The latter half of the book follows the two as they grapple with whether they should or should not join. At the same time, a serial killer is out there, getting closer to home than they would like…

This book is disturbing throughout, giving me the ick almost immediately, but it deals with questions of religion and morality and how that affects people’s lives in different ways. The actions of the twins were disgusting. The dad also sucked as a person. I thought the prose was very well-written. I also thought the story had some interesting things to say about overly religious people and their potential for hypocrisy. If I had one complaint, it was that I feel like the twins were a little passive in the story. I didn’t feel like they did much of anything until the end; rather, events were happening to or around them, and they were just there. I also could’ve had an even more bonkers ending and more gore. Overall, I thought this was interesting, and I’d recommend it for people who like screwed-up family dynamic stories. I got a free copy of this book to contribute my review to a book tour, but this did not influence my rating.
