Batcat by Meggie Ramm

adventurous lighthearted

4.0

Middle grade graphic novel-- fantasy/ adventure.  Batcat is quite comfortable at home in their tree house, until a ghost shows up.  The ghost is not particularly scary, but it does eat the ice cream and try to control the remote.  Batcat enlists the help of the local witch to solve his dilemma.  As witches are known to do, she sends Batcat on a quest to obtain three ingredients.  On their journey, Batcat is first surrounded by bats and then by cats, neither of whom are quite accepting-- after all Batcat doesn't use echolocation or have claws.  But the griffins are finally able to help Batcat see that being only one thing is overrated.  The use of they/them pronouns for the main character makes it easy to apply this logic to the gender binary, but it can be applied in many other circumstances as well.  A nice bright color palette and some fun adventure scenes add to the appeal.
