Ancillary Mercy
by Ann Leckie
3.5⭐️ rounded up.
Overall, I really enjoyed this series as a whole. I think if this 3rd book were on its own, I'd probably have given it a 3 because the plot was a little duller to me. Even the climax with Anaander seemed a little underwhelming after so much suspense built up in the last 2 books. Also, I realize that romance isn't a huge focus of this series, but I kinda felt like the romantic interpersonal relationships were a little under developed, like between Tisarwat and Basnaaid (right? see, I don't even remember because it was mentioned, but not really explored/fleshed out).
I would definitely read more by this author -- love the writing style and how she wrote Breq and all the secondary characters. As I alluded to above, I also love how she wrote truly awful characters too. At first glance, they are deceptively charming, but below the surface/if you're observant enough, like Breq and Tisarwat are, you can see they're selfish and cruel. So, yeah, would read more by Ann Leckie!

I will say the plot of this one wasn't as enticing for me, but I still loved all the characters so much! Breq is just *chef's kiss*. She's my hero. I actually missed some of the characters from the last book that were awful, but I think they added some interpersonal suspense that I enjoy. I had a hard time connecting with Lieutenant Ekalu, which I feel like was somewhat intentional. I like prickly Sievardan and prickly Medic, though prickly in completely different ways. Tisarwat's anxiety in partnership with her budding leadership skills were so well explored. Tisarwat's trauma of being taken over and controlled by Anaander, which has thus affected her own self-confidence in herself, as well as just being scared and feeling out of control after someone infiltrates your mind and body in that way. I'll admit, it took me a while to see that Tisarwat was really struggling and Breq wasn't reading too much into something that wasn't there. Breq's ability to obtain physiological and mental insight into her crew is a little iffy to me? I respect that she tries not to overstep and always keeps their confidence, but the lack of total privacy is unnerving to me. I guess that says more about me than the book. I think that allowed me to get over some of my doubt that Breq had such a good and accurate read on everyone all the time, though sometimes her hypersensitivity to other people's minds/emotions was a bit questionable that she could be right 100% of the time.Overall, I really enjoyed this series as a whole.
