This story is set in 1962 in South Carolina.
Evaline (Evvie) is a black girl spending her summer before her last year of high school experiencing her first love (Clay) and the growing of her power or Jubilation. This is a power sent down the generations/line of women in her family. This is a power to heal and save and exact vengeance on those who wrong them.
But someone who had wronged her and took something from her comes back and threatens all she holds dear. Can her powers of Jubilation help her?
Evvie is a fast learner at this magical power and a natural. She really heeds her Grandmother's instructions. She is a really sweet girl. I appreciate when she learns what this person took from her that she can get back. (Though there is a very bad thing he did to her that she can't claim back).
