The Detective Wins The Witch by Kristen Painter

4.0

As usual Painter writes with witty dialogue, fleshed out characters and visits from other Nocturne Falls characters. I am hoping Birdie gets a HEA soon.
I would move to Nocturne Falls in a heartbeat if it was a real place, with all the fun characters included. I’ve been a fan of these books since the first one and I’m looking forward to more.
Marigold has always been a good character. Single mom of a budding witch who, at 11, is getting her powers early and already planning her wedding to the Sheriffs son Charlie. Marigold works as a florist, a fitting vocation for a green witch. When she meets our hero, she is doing a favour for a local while also planning floral arrangements for her sister’s wedding, plus other weddings in town.
Wyatt is a homicide turned private detective, raised in foster care after losing both parents at 4 and an aunt by 5 years old. He doesn’t know what family feels like and isn’t sure he wants to when he stumbles into our heroine at an auction. They are both after the same items.
The mystery was ok, but predictable, bad witches and wizards, an evil pendant, good guy life-saving and eventual taking out of the baddies and everything works out. I’m left wondering if the news of Marigold’s ex, Saffie’s father, returning a real threat or was Newt messing with Marigold? That was unresolved.
The romance seemed too easy. Wyatt wavered between wanting to try and have a family, marriage etc to determined bachelorhood multiple times in a seemingly confused manner and then he is in love. All over the course of a few action-packed days. But, this is a supernatural town, so anything is possible.
I was hoping they would have discovered Wyatt had some latent supernatural DNA in him, which would explain why he sensed danger before it happened. Much like Roxy had in her bloodline and when they discovered hunter Abigail Van Helsing was a werewolf.
Wyatt’s quick interaction with Marigold’s daughter was humorous, if we see more of this couple in future books it would be good to get a glimpse of their relationship also.
The bad witch, Faleena Smalls, I initially thought she may have been Saffron’s paternal grandmother and that had been the danger Newt had warned Marigold about. I do wonder if this character was named after a certain controversial author, she was the first person I thought of when I read her name.
This is a good addition to this quirky world of supernatural. I look forward to the next one.
