Butter by Erin Jade Lange
3.0

A really interesting and horrifying premise falls victim to one-dimensional characters and a main character who suffers from Nice Guy Syndrome.

Here's the main issue. Butter kind of stalks the object of his affections online and Catfishes her, and then goes into a deeper spiral of depression when he reveals that he's been lying to her and she doesn't immediately leap into his arms and forgives him. Is a part of it the fact that he's 400 pounds? I'm sure it is, and it's unfortunate, but probably true. Also true is that he only comments on her looks too. Anna is beautiful, blonde, long legged, whatever whatever. What else did he know about her? He zones out during some of their face to face convos--nice.

I think without the romance subplot, this could be good. It was good, in fact, terribly sad, frustrating, and a look at what it means to be popular. But his obsession with Anna and failure to see his own actions as problematic was even more frustrating and brought the whole thing down.
