This is Going to Hurt: Secret Diaries of a Junior Doctor by Adam Kay

emotional funny reflective sad medium-paced

4.5

Absolutely brilliant and insightful. Inherently hilarious and unflinchingly honest, I loved this look into the NHS. Kay manages to tell his stories with genuine compassion and hilarity, often going from dry wit to heartbreaking loss in a matter of pages. He does not shy away from any issues and understands that the profession is impossible and flawed but that the NHS MUST be protected. The rise in suicides of doctors alongside many leaving the profession or suffering mental and physical consequences as a result is explored and highlights just how stupid it is when politicians decide once again to attack those who keep our nation alive. This is Going to Hurt feels even more prevalent as we begin to reflect on the pandemic, which highlighted to many that the NHS was on its knees, and that clapping for them does bugger all in comparison to actionable change like pay rises and reform. I would absolutely recommend the audio book edition of this as hearing Kay recall his own stories is amazing and you can tell the passion and love that’s gone into it.
