David Copperfield
by Charles Dickens
Shoutout to Simon Vance’s narration for getting me through the book—I listened while I read, and was very grateful for the experience.
Often times reading this, I would find myself looking up chapter summaries, to ensure I understood what was happening. There’s a lot of context missed if you are unfamiliar with the 1800s, such as the state of classism, industrialism, etc. I found reading some of these summaries/analysis brought context that I lacked, and made me appreciate more what I read.
Once I settled into this long book, I found reading it enjoyable. I started to not mind the slow and tangential nature of the writing, and felt like I was being told an epic story about the life of one man. There are many unforgettable characters—the Murdstones, Heep, Peggotty, Dora, etc. I feel like I’ll be able to recall them and their story for quite a while.
