The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson

5.0

It's been an awesome weekend. I'm getting ready to write a paper now, but I found "The One Hundred Year Old Man Who Climbed Out The Window and Disappeared" and it is SO GOOD. It's hilarious and silly and ridiculous, but I loved it so much. It reminds me a lot of another Swedish book I read, "The Invoice." Both have a silly-yet-serious tone (mostly silly), and play with satirical drama. This one caricatures world leaders from history like Truman and Stalin, while carrying the main character through every aspect of communism vs. capitalism all over the world. The best bit is the main character's disaffected nature...he doesn't care AT ALL who is winning in what war, or who is right about how the world should be operated, or if he is corrupt or straightforward. Instead, he bounds along like a ball on a trampoline, just as surprised as everyone else when he reaches 100 years old. Of course, the story can't just rely on the main character in these high-and-mighty situations, so the reader is simultaneously experiencing the character on a more intimate journey, that is also truly ridiculous. I hear it's a movie, and I'm definitely watching that this week.

If that sounds like fun to you, you'll love it. If not, skip it. Five stars for me!
