Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil
by V.E. Schwab
I was so excited to read this, the premise was so strong and seemed right up my alley. Sapphic vampires subverting standard power dynamics? Yes please. But in practice, I struggled to connect with any of the characters. Sabine was a great villain but started to feel one-dimensional, Lottie disappointed me in her willingness to sacrifice the girls out of her need for love, and Alice’s storyline just made me sad. I wanted a bit more payoff at the end than we actually got. Overall, worth reading, but not going to make my list of favorites for the year.
