Lincoln in the World: The Making of a Statesman and the Dawn of American Power by Kevin Peraino

3.0

This was the first book I received through the Goodreads "First Read" program. Peraino seeks to track Lincoln's development from Senator to President with regards to his positions on foreign policy. He does this by exploring Lincoln's relationships and disputes with friends, cabinet members, and foreign leaders. The book is well-researched, with a large section of references that also include suggested further reading. As a journalist, Peraino utilizes many newspaper accounts of various moments, but also highlights the ways in which these did or did not match up with Lincoln's personal records and correspondence. Overall, I thought this was a well-written account that discussed a side of Lincoln that is often not sufficiently emphasized.
