Ghachar Ghochar by Vivek Shanbhag

"It's very true what they say - it's not we who control money, it's money that controls us."
- Vivek Shanbhag, Ghachar Ghochar

The book is originally written in Kannada by Vivek Shanbhag and translated by Srinath Perur. It revolves around a family of 6 residing in Bangalore, they witness success almost overnight. It's narrated by a young man who's unnamed throughout the book, he lives with his Appa, Amma, his wife, Anita, his sister, Malati, and his uncle, Chikkappa. Light, easy, fun read. Smooth storytelling and good character development. In just mere 124 pages the family's transition from poor to rich is brilliantly depicted. Ways in which money transforms people is aptly shown. From an ant-infested house to a bungalow, the transition is not just in status but in behaviour of every character. The title of the book is very apt for the book and the phrase is explained during the end of the book which so beautifully ties the whole story together. Very Indian, very simple but very real and very crisp.
