This was definitely an impactful read. It explores some really important and difficult topics that do affect so many of us in some way through the coming of age story of a bisexual sophomore in college as she deals with trauma, healing, making and outgrowing friendships, and finding herself and her community. The way she had to navigate growing apart from a close friend was incredibly relatable and was the most emotionally developed part of the book. Honestly though, I had a hard time emphathizing with that friend at all, even though I think the author wanted us to…
So much of this was really raw and intense to read, so please check content warnings. I truly could feel so much of what Sav described feeling and dealing with because of what it’s like to be a woman in this world for so many. The story was compelling and meaningful.
I didn’t always enjoy the writing and dialogue since it felt a bit heavy-handed. The tone was very YA while being an adult book and it kind took me out of the story often, so I wasn’t hooked by it. I found myself a bit frustrated by some of the character motivations and decisions. I enjoy complex characters, but I just didn’t connect fully since they sometimes felt like caricatures or stereotypes. While the representation was wonderful, it ultimately felt surface level and underdeveloped. But I can see how others could enjoy this more for the things that were done well.
