Children of Anguish and Anarchy by Tomi Adeyemi

2.0

I was so excited for this finale after enjoying the first two books, but it didn't quite match my expectations. The world Ms. Adeyemi has built is still rich and complex. The care she took to building Orïsha went into the two new nations we discover here with grand/terrifying cultures. The new systems of magic are also just as thoughtful as what we've seen.

The big issue is that it feels like all of this was slapped together too quickly and too soon. While we've met people from other places in the previous book (like Roën), the introduction to these new worlds felt very sudden and sort of just thrown at the reader. The pacing also suffers, constantly climbing and hurtling forward only to just...end. Conflicts that we've seen for two books suddenly resolve or are just not addressed and past characters come and go with the same speed.

I wish Adeyemi had almost focused on the conflict on Orïsha and maybe introduced the other lands in the epilogue, allowing herself a springboard into a new series rather than hastily taking us there now.
SpoilerAs is, the big conflict for the past two books has been the future of Orïsha and we still don't have an answer. There was an armistice, but no real end to the conflict we've been following for two books now.
