The Elephant in the Room: One Fat Man's Quest to Get Smaller in a Growing America by Tommy Tomlinson

5.0

I really, really loved this book. It's so rare to see a weight loss memoir from a man's POV. It turns out I know Tomlinson's sports writing, but it wasn't his name that drew me to the book. Tomlinson was 450+ pounds when his sister Brenda died of weight-related causes and it was this that drew him to taking weight loss as a permanent move vs. a fad diet.
Tomlinson tells the story of his life in chapters that correspond to each month of his weight loss journey and covers the social and environmental factors that led to his weight gain: southern cooking, binge eating and beyond. He also explored the diets he'd tried in the past and why he was focused this time on simple calorie math vs. Whole 30 or any of the other quick fix temptations. An epilogue showed his follow up. An amazing, quick read.
