Mrs. Dalloway
by Virginia Woolf
4 stars because I think it will only get better the older I get and the more times I read it. Will definitely need to revisit because there is so much in every sentence.. every thought— every interruption.
Woolf’s fascination with people and with life is amazing. To take an unassuming, non remarkable middle aged woman who likes planning parties and make her life, relationships, and thoughts EXPANSIVE, what a revolutionary text.
There’s some mania and horror in the stories and characters( cough Septimus) but there’s also such a sense of play and humor in her turns of phrase. Appreciated the jokes here and there that made me LOL. This is dark, but I couldn’t help but think about, despite offing herself, how much Woolf loved life. She clearly did— turning it over on every side, observing it, committing every thought of every person on a london street.
