Broken Beautiful Hearts by Kami Garcia
4.0
Eliot Rosewater Nominee (2020-2021)
Peyton is a star soccer player looking forward to a full ride to UNC, until she discovers her boyfriend's secret and threatens to expose him. She finds herself falling down the stairs and the possibility that her dreams of playing profession soccer may be at an end. What's worse is that people aren't believing her side of the story, they are believing his. She knows she was pushed, but the rest of the school is taking her boyfriends side and threatening her. To get away she moves to a small Tennessee town to live with her uncle and cousins. She thinks she is done with love, but then she meets Owen who is harboring secrets of his own. Can she put the past behind her or will it follow her and keep her from trusting again.
Peyton has some rough choices and a trying situation. I loved her character though. She was strong, smart, and sure of herself and her actions. I loved that she didn't back down and refused to take crap from anyone. Peyton's father died on military mission before the start of the novel. She and her mother are both tough as nails women who will stand up for themselves. I love that her mother never doubts Peyton's story even when everyone around her does. Actually, that part made me really angry...why isn't anyone believing her story. She was just a victim of abuse and you tell her she's a liar before even hearing her out. The romance was sweet and believable, but awfully coincidental that she fell for two MMA fighters.
Overall this was a good book with a feisty main character that will appeal to romance fans.
Cautions for sensitive readers:
Violence: Dating violence, MMA fighting, and guys in the novel tend to want to use their fists instead of the their heads.
Language: Some explicit language
Sex: Yes, there is a sex scene
Drugs/Alcohol: Peyton's ex was using performance enhancing drugs and there is alcohol drinking at parties.
