A Farewell to Arms
by Ernest Hemingway
Aside from the descriptions of First World War, front-line battle, and unexpectedly kind treatment of desertion (from a man who I assumed would have thought that to be the height of cowardice), I didn't engage much with most of this story... until the final chapter. I have never read a more vivid sand heart rending passage of fear and loss.
