This was a book that I needed to sit with and discuss with someone to get more out of it. Originally, I felt like it kind of was a quick story, but not actually that fulfilling and seemed odd in its content. After talking through some of the discussion questions with others, my opinion changed quite a bit and I felt like there was a lot more to dissect and consider. This is very much in line, actually, with all of my experiences reading Octavia Butler and seems very much to be her style: engaging plots that are stories that carry you along, with subtext that if you choose to engage with can be very stimulating without feeling "preachy".
