Those Who Favor Fire by Lauren Wolk

4.0

Lauren Wolk is one of my favorite newly-discovered authors, and I immensely enjoyed reading her three young adult novels in the past few months. I checked out the e-book for this, her only adult fiction novel, and finished it over the course of a week. Lauren Wolk absolutely unequivocally shines as a young adult author, but I did enjoy this novel first published in 1999 (an entire 17 years before her next book was published.)

Those Who Favor Fire is at its heart a novel about a town. And we learn and care about that town and its demise through the main characters and their relationships with each other and with the town itself. The characters were likable and interesting, and the story was well told and held my attention quite well. However, due to the overall lack of growth that I kept hoping would find at least one of the characters, this is a four star read for me. And that ending punched me in the gut in quite an unpleasant way.

Some of the things I love so much in her young adult books - the charm, the growth, the beauty of innocence - weren't quite as evident in this one, but it was still raw and moving and I found it a worthwhile and captivating read.
