The Last Bear by Hannah Gold
5.0

I picked this one up after it was the overall winner for the Waterstones Children's Book of the Year 2022, and as a recommendation from my dear Jamie-Lee, who also spoke so highly of it. Now that I've finished reading it, I'm still trying to find the words to do this true little gem justice.

When animal loving April is told by her father that she will be joining him on a 6 month work placement in the Arctic Circle, she is more than overjoyed. The prospect of some quality time with her father after losing her mother at a young age soon blurs into her father drowning himself in work and April being left to explore the wilderness of the deserted Bear Island alone.

Until she makes a completely unexpected friend.

This had all the qualities of the most beautiful, magical children's story - it's a Disney classic in 2022 book form. It made my heart sing and brought back so many happy memories for me.

And quite frankly, any book that can make me cry - happy tears, but still - deserves 5 stars and then some.
