Love, Hate & Other Filters
by Samira Ahmed
“One thing I’ve learned: people love a camera, and when I’m filming, they see it, not me; so whenever I need to, I can quietly disappear behind my trusty shield.”-Samira Ahmed, Love, Hate, and Other Filters
I had been looking forward to this book since November when I heard about it, and I can happily say that it did not disappoint. Love, Hate and Other Filters follows the story of Maya Aziz, a young Indian American girl who is trying to balance her parents wishes, high school romances, and what she wants after she graduates. When a terrorist attack happens close to home, Maya gets a new perspective to add to her life.
I absolutely loved this book. It was the perfect balance of high school first love drama and serious real world topics. I really appreciated how the author approached the topics of racism and religion in this book. She wrote about these topics in an informative and realistic way. This was the first book I’ve read that really dealt with this issues in today’s world, and I was grateful for the way Samira Ahmed wrote about it.
