Shallow River by H.D. Carlton

5.0

H.D. Carlton could tell me her next book is shit in a bag and I'd read it. I love everything about her writing style and Shallow River cements that further. I want so much more of these characters but it wrapped up in a 'beautiful' way.

River has been through hell and back and her relationship with Ryan is no different, hell and back in a continuous loop. River is a fighter and she'll continue to save herself every day of the week. And when Mako comes along she is not willing to accept that help could save her.

I'm obsessed with River, her strength in times where no one would blame her if she took a morbid way out. The writing of the abusive relationship with Ryan was so intense and emotional, I found myself rooting for River while also wanting her to see what was happening sooner but it was textbook, textbook abusive relationship where the victim barely understands she's a victim from the long term manipulation before it's too late. And Allison! Allison's character was absolutely amazing and I'm so glad we continued to know some of her thoughts and emotions.

Mako is absolute perfection. God I love this book.
