I’m disappointed with this book. My expectations, based on the materials promoting it, led me to believe it would be something that I did not find it to be. My suspicion is that this is due, in part, to deliberate choices of the translator, who, based on their introduction, seems to have depoliticized a novel that is political at its core. The class politics that offend the translator’s sensibilities—and most likely frighten as well— are obscured or removed in such a way that leaves us with an ahistorical, vague “Oppression” and “Totalitarianism” bereft of context or meaning or class character.
