Dokkaebi: Vicious Spirits by Kat Cho

3.0

This is essentially the sequel to ‘Gumiho: Wicked Fox’ except now Junu and Somin take centre stage (though we still do see bits of Jihoon and Miyoung.)

I want to say that I was in a good head space to read this. I needed something light and fluffy upon finishing ‘The Burning God’ and on that front this books delivers. It was just what I needed!

‘Dokkaebi’ is a light read, we step back into the familiar world of fox beads and immortal teenagers trying to solve mysteries. There’s young love, pretty scenery and lots of kisses. I gotta say I enjoyed the book as a whole.

That said, it has a lot of the same problems as it’s predecessor. There’s a lot of telling instead of showing. There are parts of the writing that feels clunky, the scene jumps don’t always flow and the enemies to lovers romance went from 0-100 real quick.

I really like the world building though, the fantasy elements blend in with the modern world well and Cho does have a talent for spinning some truly lovely sentences. (Also some of those kiss scenes were very heart-fluttery.)

I’m definitely going to keep a look out for more of her stuff.
