僕のヒーローアカデミア 14 [Boku No Hero Academia 14] by Kōhei Horikoshi

5.0

The end of the Bakugo/Deku fight, introduction of the Big 3 and work studies ending with Deku first bumping into Eri and Overhaul.

As said last review Bakugo blaming himself for All Might’s state rips my heart out. I love that All Might shows up for his boys even if Bakugo’s pride won’t let him just be enveloped. But he’s come so far in how he immediately agrees to keep their secret. Also later when Deku asks for fighting tips on his shoot style and Bakugo answers honestly, sobbing, I love him so so much. I love watching him grow up.

It sometimes takes me awhile to love side characters but I IMMEDIATELY loved UA’s Big 3. They’re so quickly and perfectly summed up in such a short amount of time and I utterly adore them. Tamaki is my favorite, my shy, sweet little angel but Mirio really shines in this volume. He’s so effortlessly lovely and genuinely kind and helpful. He’s a doof, but also has worked hard to gain his top status. I also ship him and Tamaki SO much, but we get more of their precious backstory later.

I LOVE Sir Nighteye. He’s the straight man for so many goofy characters and yet I find so much of what he does so stinking funny. It’s also clear how much he adores All Might, I really wish they had gotten to reconcile before later volumes…but I adore that he always planned on taking in Deku as soon as he heard about him even if he believed Mirio would be a better successor. Mirio is kind of a mini All Might, he’d be a phenomenal successor, but obviously Deku’s journey and growth is far more compelling so I love how it is.

We got two new April babies!! The American exchange girl from Class B and nighteye’s sidekick Bubble Girl, her design won a fan contest so that’s adorable!

Overhaul is also such a good villain. He’s so genuinely scary and his quirk is horrifying. Shiggy’s is as well, but his backstory is so much more tragic I kind of understand how he became the person he is. Overhaul’s backstory isn’t nearly as fucked and yet he’s still got such a warped sense of reality, but he’s a great antagonist to not just our heroes but our league of villains, which you kind of love to see. (NGL he’d also be hot if we ever saw him without that scary plague dr mask). Also what he’s doing to Eri is incredibly fucked, makes me just want to protect her. I love that Deku immediately shields her, such a good little hero. UGH I love this arc despite how it devastates me.
