This book started off so god damn slow. Nina and Hanne's story is boring as shit to be honest. The most interesting part about Nina's chapters was her conversations with Matthias in her head and her grief. I don't think Nina needed to move on with someone else I think she needed to heal on her own through helping other people, but did not need a new love interest. It cheapened Matthias' death and their connection that she essentially replaced him with another Fjerdan days after burying him. The other half of the story with Zoya and Nikolai was more interesting. Nikolai is always iconic but Zoya really gets justice with this series. I must admit, I did not like her at all in Shadow and Bone but in this, she's amazing. The demon with Nikolai is really cool and the storyline with the Saints is the best part of the book. I was not crazy about Isaak's chapters and the story with Mayu but I loved Isaak he deserved so much better. Juris is the standout character for me, I was really drawn to him not only because he was a fucking dragon, but because he took that grizzled wise warrior trope to a new level. Zoya should have worn his scales as a crown, I said what I said. Final quotes that will stick with me forever: "Steel is earned", "You are strong enough to survive the fall" and best of all "We are the dragon, and we will bide our time."
