Berserk, Vol. 21
by Kentaro Miura
Conviction Arc
Lost Children Chapter - 5 stars
After the extensive 1000 page flashback that is the Golden Age ARC we get dropped back into the current day storyline and find guts still wandering around with a heap of pend up rage. Lost Children serves as a reintroduction to the world after the cataclysmic events at the end of the golden age by giving us a shorter more self-contained story that serves as a character moment for guts before introducing new main characters in the coming chapters. Guts stumbles into a ramshackle town where a local legend seems to have come alive with a taste for blood... and children. Tackling themes of child abuse and neglect through a fairytale gone berserk, pun intended, Kentaro Miura once again proves he is a master of telling some of the most dark and twisted tales our planet had ever seen but infuse them with a heart that shine a light through the darkness that leaves you with a bittersweet feeling after it's done.
Binding Chain Chapter - 4,5 stars
This is where the main story truly picks up again and starts introducing new characters that will be playing a major role in everything to come. It's not surprising then that these new characters take center stage during this chapter, especially Farnese. The young, ambitious and slightly mentally unstable leader of the Holy Iron Chain knights jumped into the story and straight into my heart, quickly becoming one of my favorite characters in the series yet. Her violent outburst, clearly pointing at mentally traumatizing events in her past, made her extremely interesting from the outset and she has yet to disappoint. While I would have liked to see more time devoted to some of the other knights the next chapter makes up for it tenfold.
Birth Ceremony Chapter - Chapter 5
Holy shit, that's it, that's my review.
No in al seriousness, Birth Ceremony brings everything together again into one big finale that has so much implications for the future that I just have to start reading again and have to cut this review short. Amazing character work, amazing action, amazing(ly terrifying) villain and an explosive finally. While not AS emotionally taxing as the ending of The Golden Age arc, which might not be so bad because I'd prefer not to have to go to therapy again, it's epic dark fantasy to the core.
Just. Read. Berserk.
