Wild is the Witch by Rachel Griffin
DID NOT FINISH

DNFed not too far in due to the love story set up being a bit "hmmmm". That said, this author's writing was very pretty and I did enjoy reading it up to a specific plot point because I liked the writing. I would check out her other books for that alone, and because the premise was interesting on first glance, so she might have something else in the future more up my alley.

Spoiler Witches seem to be their own race here as there are people that do magic and people that don't, and it sets it up pretty clearly in the beginning of the book that there are some tensions in the wider world around this. Iris and her mother are hiding their magic from most of the community, and they have the Love Interest hired on to help, but he doesn't know they are witches either. I was interested in this theme about prejudice and the other themes that were pretty clearly being set up about forgiveness and guilt.

But when Love Interest is rude to Iris, and then wishes death on an entire group of people (witches) that Iris belongs to, that was a bit "hmmm" for me. Then her mother just plays the wishing death comment off as if it's no concern that this kid working for them is clearly very prejudiced against them? I understand to an extent "let's show him compassion and maybe he will change if he finds out we're witches", but then she happily sends off that Love Interest into the woods alone with her witch daughter not too long after being told he wished death on all witches??? Makes no sense to me. Really came off as "boys will be boys" (we really don't need any more of that mentality in the world) with some real casual prejudice thrown in on top and all of that is just dismissed by the adult characters as no big deal.

That whole plot point is not my thing, so obviously the book is not for me. Someone else might vibe with this a lot more than I did though.
