I’m pleasantly surprised! After the dumpster fire that came about with To Gaze Upon Wicked Gods, I didn’t know what to expect. Historical Chinese-inspired SFF isn’t within my normal realm of preferred reads, but the sample actually drew me in. Almost all of the other Chinese-inspired SFF samples I’ve read didn’t click with me like this one.
🐦🔥 single first person POV
🐦🔥 war
🐦🔥 royal MCs
🐦🔥 love triangle (but it’s just the FMC having two options)
It’s primarily character driven until about the 65% mark. Around then, more of the war plot kicks in and the pace picks up a bit.
Regarding the romance aspect, the FMC, Fei, is torn between two opposing princes: Siwang and Yexue. It’s a YA book, so the romance doesn’t really go past kissing and a single spicy scene with enough euphemisms that I can barely reference it as a spicy scene.
The princes are distinct enough that it was easy to keep them separate in my head, which doesn’t always happen. All in all, while Fei does spend a lot of time pining and whining and going back and forth on who she should choose, the romance really isn’t a gigantic plot point imo?

Graphic: Misogyny, War
Moderate: Suicidal thoughts, Injury/Injury detail
Minor: Sexual content
Misogyny: A lot of the FMC’s struggles go back to the fact that fantasy novels employ the most misogyny ever sometimes. The men tend to refuse to listen to anyone that doesn’t also immediately present as a man.
Suicidal thoughts: Brief mention of it towards the end by one of the MMCs
