3.0

Chronologically, the first in The Courtland Chronicles, but I believe not the first written. This book ably sets us up with the three protagonists for the series, and is set at college in New York.
Eric initially comes over as a prick - rude, entitled, full of his own self import, cold and emotionless.
Nick is styled as a typical jock boy - untidy, bit hale fellow well met type.
As their friendship then relationship grows, we see why they are like they are and Ally, an old girlfriend of Nicks, becomes friend and catalyst for them. In particular, as Eric's background becomes more clear, my sympathy went to the mixed up kid he has been made into.
Their immaturity and Eric's conditioning to retreat internally from hurt means that they do have their troubles to overcome.
I can imagine that this will be a theme, with Eric constantly having to battle his demons. An interesting start to a series.
