The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon

3.0

The Bone Season has a great premise and is actually quite interesting. However, there was a LOT I didn't like about it, a LOT that didn't make sense to me, and that annoyed me no end.

I didn't like Paige at all. I didn't like that she was defiant just for the sake of being defiant. It's one thing to be brave and strong and tough, it's a whole other thing to be stubborn and stupid and spiteful. More than a few times, her defiance and rebellious behavior caused harm to other people, and if she was an actual person real life in a similar situation, she would not be the hero. She would be the person getting everyone else killed, and probably herself too, after making everyone else suffer for her stupid behavior.

However, I enjoyed the world building and the concept of the story. There were a lot of unanswered questions still, like what exactly are the Emim? And what is going to happen with Arcturus? But there are still six more books to go and I believe the questions will be answered gradually.

Right now I'm kinda on the fence about reading the rest of the series. I'll probably read the next one, just to see if it gets better, because while there were a lot of things I didn't like about the book and that didn't make sense to me, I still enjoyed reading it.

One thing about having to wait for the next book in a series though, if the book isn't that good in the first place, I sometimes lose interest in the whole story completely during the time it takes to wait. There are too many good books out there, and not enough time to spend on reading the not-so-good ones. We'll see.
