The Mother Tongue: English and How It Got That Way
by Bill Bryson
A good read; informative and amusing. It really does show its age, however. This was published in 1990, and the changes in contemporary society, particularly the dismantling of the former Soviet Union and the pervasiveness of the internet, have, I'm sure, had a significant impact on language. Might pick up his most recent language book soon.
