I liked that the big catalyzing fight wasn't between the love interests.
I thought the focus on family backgrounds and how they can damage your ability to communicate properly was much more insightful than I find the average romance novel and I liked the ways lots of characters were pulled in to show that, though I wish Party and Kimmie had put in a little more work in that sense. I did find the trope of professional woman getting tired and moving to a small town to be a bit tired, especially when she's supposed to be the upwardly mobile one when compared with her hereditary wealth class friends. I think I just found her (and, to a lesser degree, Wyn's) relationships to work and money to be much more reflective of an upper class upbringing in a way that didn't make a ton of sense with their backgrounds. But I thought the secondary revelation that she not only needed to investigate and communicate her own desires but that communicating with her loved ones would allow them to see her and care about her instead of being afraid they would see and be indifferent like her parents was a nice touch and gave the impression of the future capacity for growth in a nice way. Also I found it a bit unbelievable that someone that didn't genuinely want to be a doctor would have gotten this far with this much prestige, though I suppose the explanation that she enjoyed school and just didn't understand the translation between school and the workplace tries to paper over this, I just found this a bit unconvincing.
